Sage Advice - No Limits

Leah GuyDo you know that there are NO LIMITS on your life? None. There’s no chain tying you to a fence, there’s no deadlines or timelines. It’s the truth, my friend – the world is your oyster. The only limits you encounter are the ones that you place there… I can hear the excuses now. I know because I make them too. That is an old way of thinking that someone has planted in your brain – and you’ve allowed it to stay there. “That’s a pipe dream.” “You don’t have enough money.” “You aren’t smart enough.” “Artists don’t make a living.” “That isn’t practical.” Sound familiar? Some of us were lucky to have parents and mentors that encouraged us to do whatever we set our mind to. Many of us had little support that way, and we walk this world wondering if our dreams will ever come true. Well, I’m here to tell you that they can. All of them. No reason or rationale should stop you from having what you want and doing what you want, as long as your desires come from a place of integrity, selflessness and love.

Set yourself free today by looking at your limitations, then one-by-one, remove the blocks in front of you…those are stumbling blocks. If they feel too heavy to lift, then jump on top of them and leap to the other side. Just like the stones on a beach, they become larger and heavier the more time we allow each grain of sand to accumulate. Those grains of sand add up through fear, laziness, resentment or rebellion. The interesting thing is that your stumbling block is only hurting yourself and can be easily demolished. How? With love, hope, dreams, ambition and faith.

It may be a goal, a relationship, a dream, a career, an education or your health that is calling to your soul. Can you still see your desires, or are your self-imposed limitations creating boulders higher than your dreams? If you set your heart to something, it will lead you to it. Period. There is enough money – get creative or make some sacrifices. There is enough time, sit down and do a time-budget. There is hope for healing – seek alternative routes. There is a way, meditate and pray to seek divine wisdom. It will come. Don’t let yourself get in your own way. Blocks and stones are not flexible, but when you remove them and demolish your fears, you’ll step into a sea of opportunity flowing toward you constantly. Dive in!

All One Breed

These inspirational “Gifts” were contributed by readers that enjoyed Leah’s book, Life’s a Gift!

All One Breed

We are all of one breed.
All of which are one need.
In a need for each other,
Just like we are sister and brother.

Searching for the missing clues.
Putting yourself in others’ shoes.
Searching for a love within,
Forgiving others when they sin.

There are guidelines set for each.
All of which are in our reach.
So help a sister or a brother,
And don’t forget there’s always another.

The Greatest Thrill

These inspirational “Gifts” were contributed by readers that enjoyed Leah’s book, Life’s a Gift!

The Greatest Thrill
lyrics by Tom Haley

TV shows that help us grow
And shrinks that help us too
Temples and Synagogues
Churches and the zoo
We can go most any where
To help us on this ride
Why’s it seem the last place we look
Is always deep inside

Time wears on and we wear out
We begin to wonder why
Why do we come here to live
When we know we all will die
One can see as we grow old
It’s not about what we do
But about those things
We have done to help each other through

We buy cars
Praise movie stars
Eat ’til we get our fill
Travel all over the planet
Just to find a thrill
Then after awhile we begin to see
No matter how much we take
It’s the things we did for others
That were never a mistake

As you travel on your path
Remember if you will
To give a hand to others
Is the greatest thrill
If we’ll just love one another
And give each other a hand
Soon we will find peace
All over this great land

Soon we will find peace
All over this great land.

Daily Distraction Detox

Leah GuyDistractions. Our lives are full of ‘em. At least mine is… is yours? Open the thesaurus to distraction. It might read: Cell phones, work, movies, tv shows, food, new toys, family members, books, lovers, numerous dinner dates, surfing the web, shopping… need I go on? We keep ourselves so occupied on everything external. Why? If no distractions, all we have is ourselves. Whoa – now that can be scary, depending on who your self is! Yes, some distractions are healthy at times, a needed “break” from the stress we may face. We also need interaction with the world we live in. Other times, distractions can become addictions, blocks from our spirit or, well, distractions from attending to our deeper needs. My soul is craving attention & rest. My mind wants to reach for something outside myself. Sound familiar? My plan - A Daily Distraction Detox. Wanna join me?

First we have to recognize our worst distractions. Mine is my cell phone. I think I’m addicted. I had to take my phone to the store for a repair issue and the kind serviceman took it to the back office for an expert opinion. I was sitting there thinking/panicking, what if my phone doesn’t return to me. What if I didn’t have a phone? My heart started racing and immediately, I looked for relief - I’d just buy another one! But what about my contacts? My calendar. Oh Lord, I haven’t backed it up in months! That thing has been so faithful, so THERE for me, and SUCH a distraction, I don’t know what I’d do without it. You mean I used to take road trips without it? What did I do with all of that time? You mean I woke up without looking at my phone for a text message or cute little reminder noises? It’s my internet, my contact with the world, my music, my photo gallery – it stays beside me at night, always travels with me… Hang on – am I having a RELATIONSHIP with my phone?? I think I am. And if that phone were a man, it would most certainly be classified as an unhealthy relationship. CODE RED: I need a daily detox from my phone!

We all know that time to ourselves is healthy. Meditation brings centeredness. Prayer offers peace and even reduces blood pressure. Walking in nature is relaxing. A long bath in total silence can restore our spirit. But my question: Why aren’t we all doing these things everyday? I hear parents yearn for more alone time. I see business executives pull their hair out to just a minute in the office alone. People pop pills to find some mental relief. And yet, at the next available opportunity, the mom is booking a luncheon with a girlfriend, the executive is filling the hour after work with drinks, the dad is lining up a night with the boys to play poker and on and on it goes. Saturday is for shopping & laundry, Sunday is church, brunch and family visits, any free time is on the phone or mapquest to line up the next place… can we just STOP for a second? I know the next question: But When?

My favorite time to Detox from Distractions is first thing in the morning. Just give yourself 10 minutes. When you open your eyes, DON’T MOVE. Lay there. And if you can’t open your eyes because the dog will know you’re up, or your kids will start calling, then leave your eyes closed!! Start the day with the purest sense of yourself. This is a precious time. Your body has rejuvenated and, if you can catch yourself before your mind starts working, there is a connection to spirit in this moment. Stay with that. Notice how good the bed feels. Smile. Pray. Follow your breath. Think of all you have to be grateful for. And most importantly, listen to yourself. What do you need today? Aside from the phone, the schedule, the groceries, the lists…what do YOU need? If nothing else, it will allow you to tune in and recognize that there is a spirit inside you living this life. Slowly, you will be pulled to attend to that spirit. Allow this time to restore you. To honor YOU! If the morning doesn’t work, do this before going to bed. Or on your lunch break. It doesn’t matter when, as long as you can do it fully. Replace a shopping spree by sitting outside with nature. Say no to someone’s idea of what you SHOULD be doing, and fill in that time by soaking in the tub. It may be uncomfortable at first. It may feel like you are missing something or being selfish, but the truth is, you’ll be missing something if you don’t tend to yourself.

Now that I’ve distracted you for a good 10 minutes… I hope you find time to detox from the external affairs that become unhealthy. My cell phone withdrawal only lasted for a few minutes, and the time to myself is so much more peaceful… I hope you have similar results!

Detox, Expansion and Freedom

Leah GuySummertime is here and our websites have lots of fun info for healthy fun in the sun! As your editor & friend, I’d like to offer a few ideas to ponder that may be inspiring at this time of year: Detox, Expansion & Freedom. Different seasons bring elemental changes, not only in nature, but also within your unique self. Your body, mind & spirit have needs that can also be cyclical, and it’s important to listen to them. So let’s get to it. American Idol is over, the sun is shining ’til 8, and a bathing suit may be required… it’s time to get inspired, get up and take action - the solstice is right around the corner!

Detox - Body

After several months of semi-hibernation, starchy foods, cloudy days and possible 5 pm lethargy, it’s quite possible that your body (and mind!) are craving a detox. Good! Winter can be a wonderful time of contemplation, rest and packing on a few pounds to keep us warm. Summer is the time to let it all go. Cleanse, energize and get moving. God knew what He was doing with the seasons, and as the sun shines and heat rises, there’s nothing like a good sweat to flush out dormant, stale toxins. And the sun’s Vitamin D lifts your mood and restores your spirit, as well as keeps your immune system strong. There are super programs available, like Ann Louise Gittleman’s Fat Flush, Jay Robb’s Fruit Flush and other great supplements at the health food store to assist. You may want to do a general detox, or focus on the liver or colon for a more in-depth program to rid your body of built up toxins and weight. You will be AMAZED at how your mind and emotions will be cleansed as well! Jump start the program with a little research (you can email me if you want some pointers) and get rolling with it so as you play in the sun, your body will work easier to sweat and continue the cleansing.

It’s also important to keep your body in balance during the heat. Drink lots of water, eat cooling foods like dates, watermelon, cucumbers, celery and yogurt. These will help cool your system (and even your emotional state if the heat tends to “make you angry!”) Berries will help restore antioxidants and give extra fiber to help you during this cleansing period. You see, there’s a reason for these delicious summertime fruits. Nature is in perfect harmony!

Expansion - Mind

Heat is expansive. We know this in our body if we have inflammation. It’s hot and it swells, so we use ice to extract the heat and contract the swelling. But let’s talk about expansion of our mind. I think the summer is a perfect time to allow the heat and sun to expand our thoughts and our mental state of being. It’s a time to hope, to dream and to do. If you remember as a child, the joy of doing whatever you wanted for the summer was all that you could think about for months. The craving to run, hide, dig and discover was all that mattered. As adults, even with stressful lives, we need to remember the essence of this way of thinking. Take on a new hobby, explore a new area near your hometown and get out in the world to feed this need of our mind and body. Even sitting out at a baseball game without worrying about work will open your mind in a way that may allow a whole new perspective creep in. What’s wrong with that? Take a book along on a nature hike and learn at least 5 new names of plants. Take a summer course to learn French. Go to France. Lay in your backyard and contemplate the stars. It doesn’t matter what you do, but let the warmth of the sun and energy of the heat expand your thoughts. By winter, you’ll have so many new ideas in your mind and time to sit and contemplate them!

Freedom – Spirit

Every spring, I get ants in my pants to hop in my car, roll the windows down and drive across the country. And I’ve done it. More than once. Why? Because my spirit wanted to be free. Spring fever is common, as is the winter blues. Let’s think about this terminology and what we’ve already learned. “Spring FEVER (heat) and winter BLUES (cold). As the sun warms our spirit, we get a fire in our pants that makes us want to run naked in the woods. (As well you should, but I’d go pretty far in if I were you!) When the winter comes, the chill sets in and we want to hibernate, or contract. Don’t be afraid to listen to your spirit calling you this summer. It wants to play, it wants a vacation and it wants to be free, if only for a short spell. Find your freedom somewhere, and with responsibility of course. Take a day off of work, crank up the music and dance your pants off. Buy an outrageous summer outfit. Take a weekend retreat. Camp in your backyard. Whatever it is, open your heart, put a smile on your face and give yourself permission to be free.
